Proper grooming is important for your Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Below are the steps to brush your dog:
Undercoat rake, Slicker Brush, Shedding Blade (Optional), Pin Brush (Optional)
The Corgis coat is dense and medium length. Ensure your Corgi is comfortable and calm before you start brushing. Offer treats and gentle praise to create a positive grooming experience. Examine your Corgi's coat for any mats, tangles, or foreign objects like twigs or burrs. Pay close attention to areas where mats are common, such as behind the ears, under the collar, and around the tail. Start with the undercoat rake or shedding blade. These tools help remove loose undercoat hair and reduce shedding. Begin at the neck and work your way down the body, brushing in the direction of hair growth. Be gentle to avoid causing discomfort. After using the undercoat rake, switch to the slicker brush. Brush the entire coat, including the topcoat, to remove remaining loose hair and smooth the fur. If you encounter any tangles or mats, use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to gently work through them. Start at the tips of the hair and work your way up to the base of the mat to prevent pulling. Pay special attention to your Corgi's tail and feathering (the fur on the legs and tail). These areas may require extra brushing to keep them well-groomed. If you have a pin brush, use it to fluff up the coat and give it a finished appearance.
Pembroke Welsh Corgis have moderate grooming needs. Weekly brushing is typically enough.
