Proper grooming is important for your Keeshond. Below are the steps to brush your dog:
Pin Brush, Slicker Brush, and Comb
Start by ensuring your Keeshond is comfortable and calm. You may want to give them a treat or spend a few minutes petting and praising them before you start grooming. Before you begin brushing, carefully inspect your Keeshond's coat for mats, tangles, or debris. Pay special attention to areas like behind the ears, under the neck, and the legs where mats are more likely to form. Begin brushing your Keeshond's coat with the pin brush. Work in small sections, starting at the neck and moving towards the tail. Brush in the direction of hair growth, and be gentle to avoid discomfort. Brush the entire coat, including the chest and legs. If you encounter mats or tangles, use a wide-toothed comb to gently work through them. Start at the tips of the hair and work your way up to the base of the mat to prevent pulling. When your dog is fully brushed you should be able to brush the comb throughout the coat without it getting stuck or tangled. After using the pin brush, switch to the slicker brush. This will help smooth out the topcoat, remove any remaining loose hair, and give your Keeshond's coat a polished look. Again, brush in the direction of hair growth. Periodically check your dog's coat for any missed tangles or mats. Continue brushing until the brush glides through the coat smoothly without resistance. Pay special attention to your Keeshond's tail and feathering (the fur on the legs and tail). These areas may require extra brushing to maintain their appearance.
Regular brushing not only keeps your Keeshond looking their best but also helps maintain the health of their coat. Aim to brush your Keeshond at least a few times a week to prevent matting and reduce shedding. Increase the frequency during shedding seasons to keep your home clean and your dog comfortable.
