Proper grooming is important for your Australian Shepherd. Below are the steps to brush your dog:
Slicker brush and comb
The Australian Shepherd, often affectionately known as an "Aussie," has a distinctive double coat that is designed to protect them in various weather conditions. The outer coat is moderately long, straight to wavy, and has a slightly coarse texture. It lies close to the body, providing protection from the elements. The undercoat is soft and dense, serving as insulation. Start with a slicker brush. Brush your Aussie's coat in the direction of hair growth, following the natural contours of their body. Pay special attention to areas prone to matting, such as behind the ears, the neck, and the hindquarters.Use gentle but firm strokes. Be cautious not to press too hard, as Australian Shepherds have sensitive skin. Check for matting using a comb. If the comb gets stuck do not force it. Gently untangle the knot with the slicker brush. Continue alternating between the slicker brush and comb until you can comb through the entire body without it getting stuck.
As a general rule, it's a good idea to brush your Australian Shepherd at least once a week. This helps remove loose hair, prevents matting, and keeps the coat in good condition. Aussies typically undergo heavy shedding twice a year, during the spring and fall. During these times, you may need to increase your brushing frequency to 2-3 times a week or even daily to manage the excess shedding.
