Proper grooming is important for your Alaskan Malamute. Below are the steps to brush your dog:
Comb and slicker brush
Alaskan Malamutes have a dense and coarse double coat designed for extreme cold weather. Their coat is thick and rugged, built to withstand extreme temperatures and activities. They also shed excessively and this dead hair can build up inside their coat if not regularly brushed out. Additionally, some malamutes can have top coat hairs as long as 8’-12’. You will need a comb and a slicker brush to brush your malamute. Start by using the undercoat rake or comb. Gently run the tool through the coat, paying special attention to areas prone to matting, such as behind the ears, under the collar, and around the tail. Be gentle and avoid pulling on tangles or mats to prevent discomfort. If the comb gets stuck gently, work to untangle the matting. After using the comb, switch to the slicker brush. Brush the entire coat, focusing on the topcoat. This will help smooth the fur, remove any remaining tangles, and give your Malamute a sleek appearance. You will likely need high quality brushes and combs with strong bristles for your Malamute because their coat is coarse and dense.
Alaskan Malamutes are less prone to matting than some breeds do to their rugged wolf like coat, however they should be brushed a minimum of once a week to remove dead hair and keep them clean. Malamutes also blow their coats in the spring and fall, so you may need to brush more during this time.
